The Next Memory Chip Shortage – You Need a Plan!

Over the past year the global semiconductor market has shifted due to structural changes in demand and supply. At the center of this shift is a growing competition for memory chips.

What’s Driving the Shortage?

The biggest factor is the increased demand from AI data centers. Hyperscale cloud providers and AI developers need massive amounts of high-bandwidth memory to train and run large models, and are locking in supply years ahead.

At the same time, major memory makers — Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron — are shifting capacity towards profitable AI-oriented products** instead of increasing the overall number of chips produced.

What the Market Looks Like Through 2026–2027?

Analysts and industry insiders predict that:

• Memory inventories will remain tight well into 2027, with DRAM supply especially constrained.

• Prices are likely to stay elevated, with contract and retail memory costs rising significantly as demand outstrips production.

• Some memory types, like older DDR4 modules and consumer SSDs, are in short supply as manufacturers retire their production lines or reallocate capacity.

This combination has already begun to ripple through the IT industry, with PC, smartphone and console makers warning of higher production costs and potential declines in unit shipments.

What does this mean for you?

For buyers, that could translate to higher prices for laptops, desktops, and storage devices throughout 2026 and into 2027. However, there are certain processors that will not be impacted and are readily available. You could consider moving to products that feature these processors. It is imperative that you are aware this ongoing development and have a plan in place for 2026 -2028 time period.
